How long does it take to hear back after an interview?
It varies a lot by employer and role. Ask at every stage when you'll hear next, then follow up once after that date passes.
The short answer
It varies widely. A small company might decide within days, while large employers, public sector bodies and senior roles can take weeks or months across several rounds. The most reliable answer comes from the employer: at the end of each interview, ask 'When should I expect to hear about next steps?' If that date passes, wait two or three working days and send one polite follow-up. Keep applying elsewhere until you have a written offer.

The usual stages
- Application review and screening questions.
- Recruiter or phone screen.
- One or more interviews, sometimes a task or assessment.
- Decision and verbal offer.
- References, checks and written offer.
Ask the question every time
'What are the next steps, and when should I expect to hear?' One sentence at the end of each stage gives you a date to plan around and a reason to follow up.
While you wait
- Keep applying. An offer isn't real until it's written.
- Send a thank-you note within a day of each interview.
- Note what you were asked, so the next round is easier.
OffLadder CV, our free Chrome extension, saves every job you tailor a CV for to your OffLadder account and writes a follow-up note at the right time, so nothing slips while you wait.
Questions people ask
- Is no news bad news?
- Not necessarily. Delays often come from other candidates, holidays, budget sign-off or internal moves. But don't stop applying while you wait.
- Why do some employers take so long?
- Several interview rounds, many people needing to agree, approvals for budget, and background or reference checks all add time.
- Should I chase after an interview?
- Once, a couple of working days after the date they gave. If no date was given, about a week after the interview.
- What if I get another offer while waiting?
- Tell the employer you're waiting on and ask whether they can speed up. Be honest about your deadline.
- How long do reference and background checks take?
- Often days to a couple of weeks, depending on how fast referees reply and what checks the role needs.
