Is it OK to use AI to write my CV?

Yes, for wording and tailoring. The risk is AI adding skills or results you don't have. Check every changed line against what you did.

The short answer

Using AI to reword and tailor a CV is fine. The risk is that a general chatbot fills gaps with skills, tools or results you don't have, because it is trying to match the job post. Give it your real CV and the post, ask it to reword only, then check every changed line against what you did. If you couldn't talk about a line for a minute in an interview, take it out.

Where AI helps

  • Turning duties into achievement lines from facts you give it.
  • Matching your wording to the post's words where they mean the same thing.
  • Cutting a long CV to two pages.
  • A first draft of a summary or cover letter you then rewrite.

Where it goes wrong

A model asked to make a CV fit a job will often try to close the gap. It might add a tool you've never used, upgrade 'helped with' to 'led', or invent a percentage. Each of those is a question you can't answer in an interview, and in some jobs a false claim can cost you the offer later.

A safe way to use it

  1. Give it your complete, true master CV.
  2. Tell it to reword only, and to list what's missing instead of adding it.
  3. Compare old and new line by line.
  4. Put back anything you couldn't defend in an interview.

This is how OffLadder CV is built. It rewrites your CV for the post you have open, checks every changed line against the CV you gave it, and puts back anything it can't find there. When the post asks for something your CV doesn't mention, it asks you, and you answer in your own words or skip it.

Questions people ask

Can employers tell if a CV was written by AI?
Sometimes, from the style: the same stock phrases, adjectives in every line and claims with no detail. What matters more is whether the content is true and specific. A specific, true CV reads as yours whoever helped with the wording.
Will an AI-written CV be rejected by an ATS?
An applicant tracking system reads text. It doesn't care who wrote it. Some employers do ask you to confirm the application is accurate, so you are responsible for every line.
What should I tell the AI?
Paste your full CV and the job post. Ask it to reword your existing experience in the post's language, not to add anything, and to list any must-haves it couldn't find in your CV instead of inventing them.
Is it OK to use AI for the cover letter too?
Yes, with the same check. Make sure the reasons you give for wanting the job are your own; that's the part an interviewer will ask about.
Is my CV safe to paste into an AI tool?
It contains personal details. Read the tool's privacy terms, remove your address and phone number if you're unsure, and use tools that let you delete your data.

How this page is written

Sources support the factual background, not a guarantee that an exercise predicts career fit. Fictional practice material is labelled. Dates record content updates; no independent expert review is implied. More about OffLadder.

Don't pick your future. Test it.

OffLadder is a career exploration tool for people ready for a different kind of work who can't afford to guess wrong. It finds directions your experience carries into and small real-world experiments to test them, and keeps what you make as evidence you can show an employer, instead of a personality label. AI is changing jobs faster than career advice can keep up with, and employers now hire on what you can show. OffLadder helps you test a direction and leave proof behind, instead of betting on a prediction.
