Your 2027 career change plan: twelve weeks from January

A dated twelve-week plan for changing careers in 2027, from 4 January to 28 March: explore, test, decide and move, with a money threshold and a weekly review.

The short answer

A 2027 career change plan works best as twelve dated weeks from Monday 4 January to Sunday 28 March. Spend weeks 1 to 3 shortlisting two or three directions, weeks 4 to 8 doing small real tests of each, weeks 9 and 10 choosing on the evidence and checking the money, and weeks 11 and 12 building proof and talking to people in the new field. Keep your job while you test, and set a money threshold before you plan to leave.

This is the twelve-week template from our career change plan guide, with 2027 dates on it. Copy it into a notebook or calendar and change the dates if you start later.

Weeks 1 to 3: explore (4 to 24 January)

  • Week 1: write down what you want more of and less of at work, and three things you've lost track of time doing in the last year.
  • Week 2: turn those into five possible directions, then read what a normal week contains in each on O*NET or a national careers site.
  • Week 3: cut the list to two or three and find one person in each you could talk to.

Weeks 4 to 8: test (25 January to 28 February)

  • Do one small real task from each direction: a practice brief, a short project, a shadowing day or a volunteer shift.
  • Hold one 20-minute conversation with someone in each direction.
  • After each test, write two sentences: what you would do again, and what you would happily never do again.

Weeks 9 and 10: decide (1 to 14 March)

  • Compare your notes, not your hopes. Which direction did you want to keep going with?
  • Work out the money: training costs, a likely starting salary, and the savings you need before you leave. That number is your threshold.
  • Tell one person who will be affected, and ask what worries them.

Weeks 11 and 12: move (15 to 28 March)

  • Turn your best test into something you can show: a short write-up, a portfolio piece or a reference.
  • Ask two people in the new field what a first role or first client usually looks like.
  • Set the date for your next review, and either apply, start training or run one more test.

Questions people ask

When should I start a career change in 2027?
Early January works for many people because work is often quieter and the resolve is fresh. Any Monday works, though. Start the twelve weeks when you can give two or three hours a week to it.
How many hours a week does this plan need?
About two to four hours a week during the testing weeks, a little less in the others. That is enough to learn a lot without burning out alongside a job.
Should I quit my job at the start of the year?
Usually not. Test first, while you are still paid. Leave when you have a direction you have tried, a plan for the move and savings above the threshold you set in week 9.
What if I miss a week?
Move the dates. The plan is there so you keep collecting evidence, and a week late costs nothing.
